Pigments can be divided into hormonal spots (i.e. melasma) and non-hormonal pigments (e.g. freckles and lentigos). Non-hormonal spots are superficial and whatever means say peeling, whitening products and laser treatment are quite effective. Normally, improvements can be seen after the first 3-4 sessions of laser treatment. Patient should protect the skin from excessive sunlight.
For melasma, it is not recommended to use high power laser as there is a pretty high chance of rebound. Comparatively, medical class topical whitening is a safe, valued and somewhat effective in patients with moderate to severe melasma.
